In 2016, Jorge Garcia decided to leave his web programming job to follow his true passion — making games. Jorge got together with one of his best friends, Hector Sanchez, and together they crated Mecha Studios. Through the power of crowdfunding they released their first title four years later, Neon City Riders (March 2020).
Neon City Riders is an action-adventure game from Mecha Studios. The story is a mix of 80s sci-fi and gang turf wars. You play as the Selfless Hero: Rick, who’s goal is to recruit friends to help him take down super-powered gang bosses and restore safety to the magical Neon City. The game features colorful, retro-style graphics and a playful 16-bit soundtrack.
I recently had a chat with Jorge Garcia — Director, Coder, Game Designer, Sound Designer, Writer, PR at Mecha Studios. We talked about the differences between growing up a gamer in Mexico vs the US, leaving a career behind to start a game studio, his gaming influences and much more.
We both share a love for retro games and I told him about my newly acquired Analogue SuperNT (where I can now play my SNES games on HD and 4K TVs). Mecha Studios is hard at work on their upcoming second title, which I’m sure we will hear more about at a future date.
