This year’s Summer Game Fest has been almost ten days of nonstop video game reveals, trailers, updates, and hype. It all began on June 1st with THE MIX Summer Showcase and ends today with a Nintendo Direct. Geoff Keighley has created the new “digital E3 era,” to be enjoyed remotely, but still including a couple of in-person events.
Geoff’s first big showcase of the year, Summer Game Fest, took play on Friday, June 5th at the Dolby Theatre featuring co-host Lucy James, a couple of special guests, and a rowdy live audience.
For this year’s Summer Game Fest showcase, I’ve compiled a list of my TOP FIVE brand new reveal announcements — or at least brand-new TO ME.
We also got some updates on some highly anticipated games, as per usual. Let me quickly go over a few of those.
SOME GAME UPDATES
Control: Resonant is coming out this September, which only gives me a couple of months to finish Alan Wake II, and revisit the original Control. I love that this new game will take us outside of the Bureau and into the real world, which looks insane.
There were two Star Wars games shown that I am ready to get into. First, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, which will feature pod racing and other racing formats across different planets.
The second Star Wars game, Star Wars: Zero Company, is an upcoming turn-based tactics game, more like Marvel Midnight Suns and Mario + Rabbids. Star Wars: Zero Company is releasing in late August.
Geoff also showed off some more of Sea of Remnants, a very pirate/punk rock game. The song in the trailer had me thinking of My Chemical Romance but medieval. I just really love the look of this wooden doll-like art style.
TOP FIVE
1 | Two New Cuphead Adventures!
We received news that not just one, but two brand new Cuphead games are in the works. First, a Cuphead sequel, which we didn’t see any gameplay from, but we did get to meet a silly muppet version of Cuphead. I was already happy with that news alone.
But wait, there’s more! We got to see some gameplay from an upcoming 8-bit arcade platform shooter, Mighty Cuphead Adventure. This one is currently in development for consoles and PC. I’m looking forward to anything Cuphead-related really, I love that world.
2 | ALIEN ISOLATION 2
It’s been twelve years since the original ALIEN Isolation was released, and that game still creeps me out. The sequel will take us and the xenomorph to a new colony with all-new characters.
We mostly saw scenic cinematics during this trailer, but the world looks stunning. No release date was announced, so this game is still very much in development. That’s fine I can go back and play some of the original until then.
3 | The Last Ronin Finds a New Home
This was just a short teaser, but a few years ago we got a teaser for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin from THQ Nordic. We never heard anything else about that game, but The Last Ronin graphic novel was one of my favorite TMNT stories.
Seeing this property be handed over to Platinum Games (Bayonetta and NieR:Automata) is great news. I believe in this team and their ability to handle the action and combat that TMNT needs.
4 | Gundam Rogue Orbit
I recently began my journey into the complicated world of Gundam, after deciding that I might purchase my first Gundam model at Florida Supercon next month. I started watching Mobile Suit Gundam SEED a few weeks ago, and I’m really enjoying it — I’m only a couple of episodes in.
Seeing the Gundam Rogue Orbit trailer after getting into my first Gundam series, made that trailer feel extra special. The cinematics gave me some Michael Bay Transformers vibes. The gameplay also looks great.
5 | Crossfire
We finally got our first look at what new studio, That’s No Moon, has been creating. Crossfire blends some of the elements of the big AAA games many of these developers previously worked on (Naughty Dog, Infinity Ward…). I started off getting some Call of Duty and modern military shooter vibes from the trailer.
The story really grabbed me though. It’s not just another military shooter. Two opposing operatives that are forced to work together. The cover system looks dynamic and brand new. There seems to be some mystical elements within the game, as well as future tech.
HM | Some Other Cool Games
There were many other games that grabbed my attention during Summer Game Fest. Another anime-focused game was Attack on Titan 3. Fighting giant Titans looks like a great time.
CLUTCH was revealed earlier in the week. It’s a new racing sim from veteran racing game developers who formed a new studio, Maverick Games. It’s a racing game with a real story, and it features lots of customization. I also like that this one game features two racing styles, professional racing and late-night street racing.
The final game was Final Fantasy VII: Revelation. A couple of years ago I played Final Fantasy VII: Remake (the first in this trilogy), and from there I moved onto Final Fantasy XVI, which I finished last year. I have a new love for this series, and I’m hoping to get into Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth next.
Overall, this year’s Summer Game Fest was pretty impressive with over 40 game announcements, and Tupac even showed up in an upcoming game, Stranger Than Heaven. What year is this?
Geoff “Video Game Daddy” Keighley continues to bring us teasers, reveal trailers, and world premieres three times each year with Summer Game Fest, Opening Night Live, and The Game Awards. So, we’ll see you at Opening Night Live, Geoff!
