Geoff Keighley’s big Summer Game Fest event returns this Friday, but to kick off the SGF season we always have a few pre- and post-showcases. We saw the Six One Indie Showcase last week, The MIX held their Summer showcase, and the Black Voices in Gaming showcase also happened this week. Yesterday, PlayStation held their summer State of Play — and it did not disappoint.
We did get a better look at some games that are already on our radar — Marvel’s Wolverine, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, Control Resonant. We also got news that some recent PC releases were finally making their way to PlayStation 5 very soon — Dune Awakening, No Rest for the Wicked.
While I’m very much looking forward to the release of all of those games, I will not include them in my TOP FIVE list from the State of Play. I am reserving my TOP FIVE for games I didn’t know about.
We haven’t seen many game releases out of PlayStation first party studios lately. There are always games coming to PlayStation, but it’s nice to have a steady release of exclusives each year. There are a few games that we know are in development, and yesterday we got to see a few new ones.
I knew we’d be seeing Marvel’s Wolverine and I didn’t think I needed anymore gameplay, but seeing it only made me want it more. Either way, I’m still getting into Marvel’s Wolverine on day one — thanks to my love of Insomniac Games, with the Spider-Man series and Ratchet & Clank.
Let’s go over my TOP FIVE list of brand new games — or brand new to me.
1 | Rayman Legends Retold
My wife and I have been slowly playing through Rayman Legends ever since it came to the PlayStation Plus catalog. It’s a great co-op 2D platformer with short levels. We can jump in and play some levels and move onto something else. You can also play your way — do you go for every secret, or just try to make it to the end of the level?
Rayman Legends Retold is a 3D reimagining of that game, with a few additions. So, instead of finishing the original, maybe we’ll just hold out until this one comes out.
Rayman Legends Retold releases on October 1, 2026.
2 | Bancho the Chef
I love that Mintrocket isn’t following up Dave the Diver with Dave the Diver 2. Instead they are creating a prequel telling us the story of the chef, Bancho. The cooking elements seem kind of similar, but there’s an RPG here as well. No more diving.
I really enjoyed Dave the Diver and need to get back to it, but there were times where I wanted it to just be one game, not two. I either wanted to dive or cook. Bancho is also a cool ass character.
Bancho the Chef is currently in development. No release window announced.
3 | Kemuri: Hunt the Unseen
I don’t know if I will play Kemuri myself, but I love the look of this game and the energy from Unseen studio lead, Ikumi Nakamura. I will definitely get into a demo or beta to give this game a try, and I’m looking forward to seeing more in the future.
The story of hunting unseen demons and creatures in a modern world really has my attention. Plus, I’ve been watching more anime the past few years, and this is an anime ass story.
Kemuri is set to release in 2027.
4 | Stuntman Hollywood
I first thought Saber Interactive was creating a new The Fast & the Furious game, which I wasn’t really sure about. The trailer pulled a fast one on me, when they switched it up to show KITT from Knight Rider, and the Deloreon from Back to the Future. I really like the idea of driving through different stunt sequences from iconic films.
Saber Interactive loves their licensed games (they are currently at work on the John Wick game). Stuntman Hollywood is unique, because it doesn’t just follow a single property. You get to play through action-packed moments from different worlds — and I wouldn’t mind if they add some of their own. I also remember playing the classic Stuntman games back in the day that inspired this one.
Stuntman Hollywood is coming soon.
5 | God of War: Laufey
There have been rumblings of the next God of War game, and where would Kratos go next. Will he continue with Norse Mythology, return to battle the Greek gods, or would he go somewhere new?
The gameplay trailer started off by taking us back to the opening of God of War (2018), where Kratos and Atreus burn Faye’s dead body. We are then transported to the afterlife with Faye, and the next chapter in the God of War series will follow her journey. From this trailer alone, the gameplay and combat look insane. The world is beautiful and kind of weird, and I love that. Also, Faye is played by the great Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil, True Blood).
From the gameplay God of War: Laufey looks like it could be almost ready for release, but since this is the first announcement, I’m sure we’re a year or more out. More details coming soon.
Overall, I’m pretty satisfied with this PlayStation State of Play. It lasted over an hour, with about 20 minutes dedicated to God of War: Laufey — why not Goddess of War: Laufey? Another 10 minutes to Marvel’s Wolverine.
We got to see more than twenty games, and it was a good mix of new stuff and updates on current and soon-to-release titles. This was the right amount of games for a showcase. Some showcases are too overwhelming, you get over sixty games and you remember just a few. Also, this week is about to be packed with game announcements.
I know I complained about PlayStation not releasing too many first party titles in recent years, but I am currently playing Ghost of Yōtei, which came out last October. I also have a lot to catch up on, so maybe it’s not such a bad thing.
