It felt strange to wake up yesterday morning and not have a Nintendo Direct to look forward to after two back-to-back mornings of Nintendo announcements.

Tuesday morning there was a special The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Nintendo Direct. What made this even more exciting is that this year is also my 40th Anniversary of being on Earth. Yes, I turned 40 this year along with Zelda, Link, Ganondorf, and the wonderful world of Hyrule. I didn’t really get into The Legend of Zelda series until later in life, but it’s nice to know that we both began our separate journeys together.

Wednesday morning started off with a full-on Nintendo Direct, featuring over 30 game announcements — some new, some old. A Nintendo Treehouse presentation followed that Direct and showcased some gameplay from the upcoming Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort.

I would normally pick my TOP FIVE game reveals, but I’m going to instead break it up into topics or categories. There are still a few on the list that are just straight up game reveals. The Zelda 40 Year Anniversary Direct only really featured one game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake, but we also got some Zelda-related events, items, and more on the upcoming live-action movie titled, The Legend of Zelda (no subtitle).

1 | GAMES COMING TO NINTENDO SWITCH 2

Every Nintendo Direct features a couple of games that have been out, but haven’t yet made their way to the Nintendo Switch 2 (or Nintendo Switch). In the days of the original Nintendo Switch, these were usually older AAA and third-party games. In the Switch 2 Era we are now seeing fairly new games make their way to the Nintendo Switch 2, thanks to its great power — I still can’t believe I’m playing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on my Nintendo Switch 2.

The game that kicked off Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct was Monster Hunter Wilds, which was released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC back in February 2025. It is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 later this year (December). Last week, during the PlayStation State of Play a new expansion Ascendance was announced for early 2027, so it makes sense to bring Monster Hunter Wilds to Nintendo Switch 2 right before a big expansion arrives.

There were also some indie games that hadn’t made their way to Nintendo Switch 2 yet. There was some big hype for Cairn when it first released in January this year to consoles and PC. I am always happy when I miss out on a game but it gets a second release to Nintendo Switch 2, which gives me another chance to get into it early. Cairn is set to come to the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027, and there’s a free demo out now.

Another recent release I missed out on was 007: First Light. I much prefer to play these large third-party titles on my PlayStation 5 to get the best visuals and gameplay, but it is also nice to see them running on the Switch 2 — as I mentioned with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It also blows my mind to see a “heavy ass game” running on the Nintendo Switch 2 in handheld mode. Coming to Switch 2 this year.

During Opening Night Live and Gamescom we got some big The Witcher 3 news that not only was there new paid DLC Songs of the Past on the way (2027), but they were also working on a remastered version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This game is now over 10 years old. I played about 10 hours of this game on my PC, and I read the first book in the series. Coming to Switch 2 September 29th.

2 | MORE ON OVERCOOKED SUCCESSOR

Stage Fright first appeared at The Game Awards a few years ago. Then they went totally silent. I have even reached out to Hello Games for any news on Stage Fright and haven’t heard back from them.

This is why I was so excited to see this game once again, and we now know it is coming next year (2027). Stage Fright is a new co-op adventure puzzle game from the makers of the Overcooked series. The Overcooked games are how I got my wife into playing video games with me at the start of the pandemic when we were first dating.

Now I look for any couch co-op games for us to play together. Recent games include Split Fiction, Absolum, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate, and currently Orbitals (Switch 2 exclusive and great couch and online co-op game). I can’t wait to get into Stage Fright.

3 | SOMETHING NEW & DIFFERENT

There was one game that really stood out to me from Bloober Team, ONYX: The Dark Grip. This is a spooky Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive game that was made to be played in handheld mode. It uses the features of the Nintendo Switch 2 from the touchscreen to motion controls in peculiar ways.

It seems as if the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour was an actual game with a story that was showing off some of the Nintendo Switch 2 new features. I love this game as a concept, and I hope it has a good story with it, but I trust Bloober Team after playing a few of their recent releases — Observer and The Medium.

4 | TWO NEW FIRST-PARTY NINTENDO TITLES

When it comes to playing as Samus Aran in Metroid games, I have always preferred the 2D variations. I picked up Metroid Prime Remastered for the Nintendo Switch, but didn’t get very far into the story. That is why I wasn’t that excited for Metroid Prime 4 when it came out.

I never finished Metroid Dread, but I really enjoyed that style of gameplay. I hope to go back and finish before January 28, 2027 — when Metroid: Ravenous comes out. If I look back on my history with Metroidvanias, they are some of my most played games but also the type of game I rarely finish. At some point the map gets too large and I get overwhelmed and lost.

Metroid: Ravenous also has such a punk rock look to it — at least the “Ravenous” part of the logo. I like that it’s not just the next version of Metroid Dread, there’s a lot that seems to make it its own game.

The second brand new first-party Nintendo title that was announced was Kirby and the World Beyond. I had such a great time playing Kirby and the Forgotten Land a few years ago. It was also my first time finishing a Kirby game.

The trailer for this new entry in the Kirby series, Kirby and the World Beyond, started off looking like Kirby was in a safe, beautiful world with green fields and beautiful landscapes. At some point things aren’t as they seem when he punctures a hole in the sky. I like the whole Truman Show vibe to this game, where it seems like Kirby is in his nice, cute world but there’s something else going on in the “World Beyond.”

Kirby and the World Beyond is set to release Spring 2027.

5 | THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: OCARINA OF TIME REMAKE

A few months ago we got a teaser about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake and found out that it was coming out some time this year. On Tuesday, we got a look at some real gameplay and how the world has been reimagined to look and play like a game of today.

I guess it’s time to finish up The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. 

I thought I hadn’t played the original The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Nintendo 64, but after seeing more gameplay of the remake I can now confirm that I definitely remember playing through a few of those moments. I might have borrowed or rented the game, but I definitely never finished it.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026.
