What’s Nintendo Hiding?

We all know that Nintendo is currently hard at work on some long-awaited sequels: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4.

What else is Nintendo hiding?
A secret F-Zero project?
Some new Star Fox game?
Mario’s NBA 3-on-3 Jam session?

Every month Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to be one of the best selling games on the Nintendo Switch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo Switch) is just a port of Mario Kart 8 (Nintendo Wii U) which was originally released in 2014. Ever since it’s re-release in 2017 on the Nintendo Switch it has been topping the sales charts.

Since it’s re-release on the Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold over 35 million units (after selling less than 9 million units on the Wii U in six years up to 2020). It’s amazing how all of these forgotten Wii U games are seeing a second (and bigger) life after being ported to the Nintendo Switch.

How does this game keep selling?
Is everyone buying multiple copies of this game?

Nintendo knows that they are sitting on a gold mine with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, they haven’t even updated it since it’s re-release. The re-release is just a port of the original game with all the DLC, but they haven’t release any new content since.

The real question here is, “Will we ever see a Mario Kart 9?” And what will that look like? It’s been a full generation cycle since this franchise has been updated, and sure it still plays great, but imagine all the cool new stuff we’re missing out on. If there really is an updated “Switch Pro” console in the works, we better see a Mario Kart 9 teaser with the reveal.

There’s definitely a fully developed Mario Kart 9 sitting in the Nintendo Bunker somewhere in Washington (or Japan). I bet the Nintendo Bunker is full of new Nintendo titles just waiting for the right moment to be released, along with a bunch of Battle Royale (Tetris 99, Pac Man 99, Mario 35-type) titles in the works.

How do you think every Nintendo Direct is able to end with a “One more thing!” They’re just waiting for those Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales to slow down a bit before they drop Mario Kart 9 on us, like a new Super Smash Bros Ultimate DLC fighter.
